Would an /a/d/s/ 4.15 amp be worth buying to run 2 pair of 6.5" Infinity Kappas? It is rated at 16.6x4 at 4 ohms, or 32x4 at 2 ohms.

Right now, I am running the speakers off of my older Sony ES head unit, which I think puts out 17x4. The Kappas are pretty inefficient, so I have to crank the volume pretty loud. I am afraid the signal isn't too clean at those volume settings.

I guess my question is, would the /a/d/s/ do a much better job than the head unit?

I would have to say yes. Although 16.5 watts isn't very much, look at the size difference between your deck and the amp. They couldn't fit a comparable amplifier in that small of space. Also, being an a/d/s, I'm sure it is a little under-rated. It should still sound clean at a high gain setting too.

You probably are going to notice any difference in sound.

since both pairs of speakers are the same, why not just buy a 2 channel amp and run all four speakers at 2 ohms. Buy an amp that's rated anywhere from 50x2 to 100x2 at 4ohms and you should be in good shape. If you use a high quality amp, I think you'll be amazed at how much better they will sound than they do now running off your HU.

The only downside to doing this is losing fader control, correct?

Yes, that is the downside; however since both sets are the same, and they will recieve equal power, they will sound the same. Now if you don't mind your rears playing the same volume as your fronts, this setup is ideal. However if you do want the front a bit louder, this option will not work. I have very similar components for front and rear and they recieve equal power, and I'm happy with the sound. To be honest, I can't hear the rears over the fronts so I'm happy. Plus the more power you put to them the better. I previously had a phoenix gold 2 channel running both sets of components, 90x2 at 2ohms and it sounded ok. Now I have a PPI A300 running both sets, 150x2 at 2ohms and hands down the ppi takes the cake.

Well guys, I got the new a/d/s/ amp off of ebay for $31. I figured I got a pretty good deal.
