I was just wondering what you all think. How much boost could you push on a Zetec Contour w/stock internals? I believe (what I have seen and read) the compression ratio is 9.6:1. I was thinking around 5-7 PSI for about 150 -160 wheels. Your thoughts?

i thought it was 10:1:1,, but i definitely could be wrong. but go for it. boost is good.

You could push more power out of the engine than the ATX could handle.

That's not saying much, but it's the truth!

Considering the same tranny mates up to the Duratec, you could probably go for some light pressure turbo action and not put the tranny at risk.

So, until you exceed 170HP and ~160#ft of torque at the crank, you don't exceed the output of the V6 Duratec.

Now if you are trying for 300 FWHP, then you are probably risking the tranny.

IIRC, the torque rating of the transaxle is the biggest concern, and I think the same transaxle (the CD4E) is used in the FWD V6 Escape. If that is the case, then I'm going to go out on a limb and say you are probably fine upto 200#ft of torque at the crank. (Using the appropriate lawyerized weazle words of course.)

TB

Ask Terry Haines...he should know

IIRC he gradually increased the power on the turbo kit he was developing until rods broke at about 250 FWHP..I think this is also about when Tom switched to forged internals although he may have breifly run at higher power levels. Keep in mind that maintaining a high power level for relatively brief testing is not the same as long term durability...if rods were breaking at 250 FWHP for example I would not run 249 HP. Maybe 180-200 FWHP with the understanding that durability may still be compromised somewhat. A rough guide Ive heard is that near stock stock durability may be maintained (assuming excellent maintaince & tuning)with an extra 50% power (with stock, non forged internals)..so 130 HP + 65 HP is about 200 crank or 165 FWHP

Well I was meaning to ask that too. That is why I figured on the 5-7 PSi of boost (counting in the fact it is an ATX). Right know I figured I have 150Hp at the crank. Even 200 crank HP (is only about 150 WHP in the ATX). I would be looking for reliability also. Is 175 WHP out of a ATX just pipe dreams?

Not with a turbo its not. Heck, just build the engine and push it till the trans breaks. Then you can source a trans from a junk yard and build it to take the new power you've made.

I did 302HP at the wheels for 5000 HARD miles before going to the new engine with better rods

I now have 2 of my turbo kits on bone stock engines doing over 200hp at the wheels with stock exh and stock TB on pump 93 fuel

Neather are ATX tho ,,there are 2 companys doing the ATX build up that they say will hold 430hp at the wheels Wolf and level10

I am now at 435hp at the wheels on the stock block and cast crank

BOOST IS FUN

Tom
