While racing an Eagle Talon last night and barely beating him, my car shut off at 110MPH.
Check Engine light turned on, Oil light turned on, etc. I pulled over to side of the road, pulling on the E-brake light a Mudafuka. I waited about 5 seconds then started it back up again like nothing happened.
The car is a stock 96 Contour.
A friend said it could be vapor blow-off with the fuel line getting hot and the engine getting fuel-starved. Another thing is with older cars exist that are programmed by the governor to shut off at a certain speed.
Needless to say, I was scared s.h.i.t.less when I had NO brakes going 110!!!!
You guys know any reasons for what happened to me?? Should this be a cause for concern??
thanks!

Weird, just had the SAME thing happen to me at about 70mph. I re-started it and drove it to work no problem, checked for codes and got none. First time for me and quite odd.

Check you OIL Level.
IIRC, if the Oil Light turns on, it sends a signal to your PCM, and the PCM will shut down the motor to prevent damage.
Remember, you should have at least 5.8 - 6.3 quarts of oil in the pan, according to Rousch Racing.

I've never heard this before.
What I would check is your battery connections. Might have jarred one loose when you hit the speed limiter. The speed limiter certainly won't shut your car down like that on purpose - that's not safe.
But then again, I bet the "officials" at the "track" didn't think it was safe for you to shut down like that either.

A loose battery terminal would cause ALL POWER to fluctuate and possible burn out the alternator. It wouldn't cause a CEL and Oil light to light.
Check with Bill or Jim on this one.

CEL and Oil light did go off, but I believe they turn on when you turn the key to the start position.
I doubt those lights turning on mean anything.
A friend at work says her Cougar shut off after hitting a "rev limiter".
As far as oil, I have the 4 cyl. so I only need about 4.5 quarts. I can't remember what Haynes recommends.
OFF-Topic, does anyone know if I can do better then $540 for set of Koni shocks?
Thanks!!

You said they turned on when you were running at 110 mph, didn't you ? Just as the engine died ? Lets stay focused on the topic please.
