1995 Contour GL, 2.0 MTX, 109K miles
Acceleration seems a bit sluggish, subdued, starting out in 1st gear until speed reaches about 20-25. then it is as if the engine really "catches on" and it boosts the car in a noticably more lively manner.
I can't feel and clutch slippage nor engine miss.
Just this sort of "two stage" acceleration.
What's up?

Mine is the same way. I just figure its because the Zetec isnt the torquiest engine until its revved up a little. It got better when I installed a better intake and removed the exhaust resonator.

Same boat I am in. I just chalked it up to being an ATX though.

funny I have 80% of my total torque at 2600rpm which is very little over what I launch at...

Even if you don't have the answer, you certainly have to admire the problem.

Maybe its worn sparkplugs or dirty fuel injectors.
A worn spark plug's gap is larger than its supposed to be becasue it has eroded over time. This larger gap will produce a spark that is not as hot as it would be if the gap were correct and therefore, the fuel doesn't light as well and can casue reduced power.
Ro clean the injectors fill up with premium gas, add a bottle of injector cleaner and drive a little harder for that tank, maybe do it for 2 tanks of gas. This will burn any deposits away. If this doesn't give you the results your looking for, try changing the spark plugs. If that still doesn't give you what you expect then it might be time for a tune up.
Hope this helps you, somehow.
