Rather big and annoying problem. Putting new breaks on today and as I was taking off the second front tire one of the lug nuts was a bit tight, as I was taking it off, a 1/4 inch of the bolt came right off. Well as I had already put new pads and a rotor on the other side, I put did the same on this side, put a new lug nut on there to tide me over, when as I was tightening another lugnut, half of the bolt came off. I was able to get another one on w/o any issues and one more with a new lugnut, the old one was having a great many difficulties. Now I recently got tires put on, (last weds.) As I'm thinking they either put a lugnut on screwy and the rest went south or, they just goofed up the rest, I'm going to try to drop the car off at the place I got them put. Anyway, I know that you have to punch the bolts out if they haven't screwed up the hub, and am just wondering how much that will cost if they refuse to fix it for me.

Weird but a similar thing happened to me last year. Don't remember any problems putting on the wheels, but I went to take one off and one lug nut was stiff. And then it snapped as pulled a little harder. I really didn't think I could snap one so easy. I make sure to lube them every time now.

Lubing lug nuts is a no-no. Best you get a torque wrench and torque them to spec, most problems arise with too much torque which grease monkeys with air wrenches seem to always do.

Yes, monkeys + compressed air = bad.

Horsehockey!!! Every torque value given is for a clean and lightly lubed thread. If you don't lube they will corrode and you won't be applying as much torque to the wheel as you think. Sure the nut will be tight, but the wheel and rotor won't.

If the hub isn't screwed up (it shouldn't be), and you replace them yourself it may cost $10 max for new studs & lugs. For new hub, maybe $30.

few rules I follow: must not lube the studs. must use torque wrench. mustn't allow monkeys w/ compressed air come close to my car. works for me

oh, and btw, what's the length of the OEM wheel stud?
thanks,

well the company fixed it for me, no charge. They replaced one of the studs completely and rethreaded the other ones, as the other three were goofed up. Hopefully this won't provide a future headache, but I have a feeling it just might be worthwhile to replace all the bolts myself when I get a chance.

RETHREADED ???

I've NEVER heard of rethreading lug bolts.
Always replace, and a little white grease on the bolt
prior to reinstalling the wheel, will NEVER hurt.
