I just spent about 20 minutes taking the diff out of the tranny. Now I'm not sure which piece I need to measure to see if machining is needed... I'm going to take the diff assy to a machine shop if machining is needed, but I want to know if it's even needed first.

Has anyone tried to R&R the roller bearing without the specialty tools? Or where can I find the puller and driver?

I also wanna clean those oil off of the diff assy before taking it anywhere, can I use Simple Green or will it damage the gear?

Assume you are fitting a Quaife?...I'd study the Ford CD in the trans section on 'reassembly', you will need bearings etc a dti gage to establish if the Quaife is too wide when setting up with the Ford shims..assume you have a set of the shims for adjustment?

Yup, fitting the Quaife. Looks like I'm going to have to borrow my friend's dial caliper soon. Now, what should I use to clean it up so it doesn't dripp all over the place?

Actually Terry, when I read the instructions you sent me I didn't notice anything about machining... So is using a correct shim all I need?

Sorry,I thought you said a mech was doing the Quaife but what ever.You will need a set of Ford shims for the diff, around $120 a set.You need to measure the Quaife with its new bearings on ,new outers in the case and a 1.00 mm 'base' shim from the 'pack' then you can establish if a custom shim or m/c is needed re the Ford specs...
