Ok, I think we're all aware of the over-sensitivity of the coolant level sensor and how you need to fill the level so it's above the max line if it's coming on periodically.

Well, I've had that same issue in the past and adding a little to the res. made it go away. Now though, that's not the case.

I'm a good 1/4" to 1/2" above the max line and the light still comes on. At first I thought it might just be the coolant sloshing around, but on a straight, even highway it will just come on for no reason (well some reason I don't know) it'll stay on for maybe 30 seconds then go off again.

I've stopped before to see what's up when it goes on and the level in the res. it still that good 1/4" above the max line.

It's just driving me nuts

Has anyone had the sensor fail? I'd think that it would either stay on all the time or off all the time if it went bad. I dunno.

When I bought my 1995 Contour I always joked I would drive it until the wheels fell off...never did I realize that with this car, that could actually happen!

Well.. I know that the sensor can get gunky, at the bottom of the res. and cause it to not be able to "see" how much is there... you might wanna check into how dirty your sensor is, or just replace it anyway...

You could always fill reservoir completely with 50/50 and see if it stays off. The only risk would be having some coolant released until an equilibrium level is reached.

Fill the tank so it is a little over 1/2 inch above the full line. This fixed my same problem.

Hi,

I don't think there is anything "optical" in the coolant sensor. It is simply a magnetic reed switch that is activated by a magnet embedded in a float. Possibly the post that the float rides up and down on is gunked up. If that is the case, you'll have to remove the tank and fill it up with water and shake it VIOLENTLY to remove the crap. It will be difficult because there isn't a direct shot to that area of the tank...too many walls/chambers.
