well...i'm still gonna look into raising that cover just a touch. i can't stand that noise. and for what it is worth, those timing belt covers are not air tight by any means. they are just pieced together with gaps in betweent he pieces. i think dust and water could get in through any of those cracks if it wanted to. and it has. when i was poking around in there i noticed that it was somewhat dirty. there must be a way to make some kind of lifter in the shape of the "footprint" of that cover so thatit will close it off in the same way.

but before i do that, i'm gonna drive without that cover for a couple days to be sure that that is my only problem.

Let us know if removing the timing belt cover helps.

In my earlier post I mentioned that the water pump is easy to replace. I have been repairing cars for over 2 decades. Replacing water pumps is so easy for me that I could easily do it while blindfolded.

Why not use a gasket type spacer. In other words, cut a gasket in the shape of the cover or use the squeeze kind.

i haven't gone in there yet. i'm still waiting for my ignition coil from RaceSearch. once i get that, i'm adding the electrical goodies and taking that cover off.

i'll let you know how it goes.

as for the water pump.... did you have to take the steering pump assembly off to get to the radiator hose? that's what it looked like to me and since i know vey little about how steering systems work, i chickened out and ended up paying through the nose for that job.

Here are the steps to changing the water pump

6. Clean water pump and cylinder block gasket sealing surfaces with wire brush or gasket scraper.

Installation
1. install new water pump housing gasket.
2. Lubricate lower radiator hose with silicone lubricant before installing hose to water pump
3. Fill engine cooling system with 50/50 mixture of water and coolant, then run engine and check for leaks.

do you have air conditioning?

i remember for some reason i could not for the life of me reach my hand in there and get to the radiator hose. there just wans't enough room!

oh well. i have another 55,000 miles to tryand install the water pump again. i guess i'll have better luck next time!
