I have a 98 svt with manual tranny and just suddenly have a problem shifting into reverse. Ive had a B & M short shifter for years now with no problems. When I move the stick to the reverse position it doesnt seem as smooth as it used to, I kind of have to jam it in to get it to go. I eventually get in to engage but only after a few tries. If it doesnt engage and I let off the clutch Ill hear grinding and I have to try it again. Clutch is fine just getting into reverse is the problem.

I had the same problem, until I pulled the cowl up around my shifter and found that the two screws that ford put on the top of my shift tower had gotten loose. I tightened them up and it came loose again within two weeks, so I got 4 brand new ones from a hardware store (with a phillips head instead of hex) and its been fine ever since.

Yes, it sounds like your reverse syncro is bad. Try putting it into fifth gear and then wiggle it down into reverse. I'm not sure why, but it can keep it from grinding.

Make sure you check the connections inside the car below the shifter and the busings on the transmission shifters first.

He is talking about the screws on the shift hardware inside the car below the shifter being loose.

Kermit was on the money with his suggestion. The rubber bushing at the shift tower are worn out. Now my quesion is where do I get this bushing? I called a svt cerified dealer and they said they dont sell that.
