I belong to Neco since i have a Cougar but i post/troll these forums since we share lots of things. But anyway to my problem:

Ok well last Friday i tried to time my 3L which has SVT cams. Now for some weird reason the right bank or looking at the crank bolt would be the left, there is tension on the one side and really tight on the other. The key way is at the 11 o'clock position and the colored links all match up. I don't get it.

I tried timing it a total of three times now. The first time both banks did it. Now the other two times the left (looking at the crank bolt would be right) is fine but the right is wrong. I really have no idea why this is happening!

The first time i tried to time it i followed the Ford CD which says to time the left bank than turn the crank to the 3 o'clock position than time the right. Now looking at DanG build pic you can see all his timing marks are lined up and the crank is at 11 o'clock:



So i tried twice today and I'm still having the problem.... I'm out of ideas. I always turn the crank clock wise.

I just used the marks on the cams/chain/and gears. Everything turned out fine. Try taking it apart, re-doing it paying close attention to the directions and everything should be fine.

Tomorrow when i work on it again, it will be the four time trying to time this thing. I dont really understand why i am having problems when i never heard of anyone having them with the timing. I mean how dam hard is it to line up colored links with cam marks right!

For some reason the right bank has slack only on one side of the chain and the tensior moves back and forth when you crank it by hand.

Am i suppose to time the left bank than turn the crank to 3 o'clock or time the whole thing with the crank at 11 o'clock?

What you wanna do is get your cams in leaving the caps a little loose. Set crank keyway to 11 o'clock (left bank in that picture cylinder #1 at TDC). Install the chain for the left hand bank making sure to use the alignment marks on the crank opposite the keyway (the keyway is NOT the timing mark, the correct mark is about 150 or so degrees from the keyway). Once set, install the tensioner for that bank and release.

Rotate the crank clockwise to the 3 o'clock position (right bank all valves closed). Repeat chain installation as previous bank.

You might have a bit of slack in the chain on one bank or the other but it should be taken up once you start to bar it over.

Normal slack in the chain is taken up during operation by the hydraulic tensioner.

I don't recall the 3 o'clock. Just put it on the 11 position and slapped the chains on. Rkneeshaw's after we timed it. It's in the 11pm. I've just bolted on the cams and followed the Ford book/CD. Pretty easy.

You DO realise that the left bank is the one on the right in the picture, right?

In fact all the cams should say "LH" on them. Timing these things is EASY if you follow the Ford CD (for the 2.5L!) by the letter.

Yes i know thats when i say left bank looking from the crank bolt its the right.

I just retimed the thing again and its doing the same thing. Maybe its just me and its suppose to do this, i really dont know. So i took a little video of it.

If you're worried about the slack in the chain, that's not going to go away until you fire the engine up and get some oil pressure built up for the chain tensioners. Isn't that so?

Congrats, you timed it right 4 times

Granted, the video is brief, but I don't hear any interference. Slask in the chain is normal until the tensioners are primed with oil. As long as the key on the timing sprocket is on correctly and all the chain's colored links match up with the corresponding cam/sprocket markings, you are good to go.

Ohh believe me, so enjoyed timing the thing four fing times!!! It will hunt me for the rest of my life!!!
