Amazingly, my Contour comes equipped with an 8 speed transmission during moderate or hard acceleration.

When accelerating the transmission shifts but it feels like the torque converter fails to lock. After a couple of hundred yards, the RPMs drop about 300 and the transmission is firmly in gear.

This only happens on medium to aggressive acceleration. Other times, the shifting is completely normal.

Any ideas?

The fluid has been changed twice with the recommended product. The fluid levels are good and constant and the fluid is not breaking down.

If I had 400+ horsepower I could claim I was overpowering the drive train...

Welcome . What year, engine and how many miles?

Based on your post, it is an automatic. When was the tranny fluid changed (mileage and time)? If it is more than 2 years or 24k miles, try changing the ATFluid first.
Click for ATFluid 3X drain and refill

If that doesn't help, post a more complete detail of what is actually happening. It may be a bad Manual lever position sensor (or cable) or bad torque converter but you won't really know until you do a real time transmission scan (about $100).

Drive to Autozone or Advance to read the Check Engine Light code(s) and post the exact codes.

2.5L V6
Automatic Trasmission
106,000 miles.
Last trans fluid change was 103,000 miles.

Only CEL codes are for upstream Ox sensor. Replacing soon.

My tour is that color as well. Did you have the front bumper repainted? I noticed the silver strip is gone. Like the rims as well.
