Where the 'gross carbon crap' is, is it possible for me just to spray on some simple green degreaser or something like that, and scrub it out with either a wire brush or bristle brush? Assuming of course I don't plan to move any further from this point.

Umm yea if you want it all going into your engine. Umm why did you pull the UIM off if you didn't plan on taking the LIM off? Pointless since that's where most of the build up is. WTH? x11000000000000. Unclip the injectors and the fuel line and take it to the work bench.

Also tell me you bought new upper & lower gaskets. The lower gaskets can get disturbed upon upper removal if they have high mileage on them. Leaking gaskets are not cool.

I agree, but in a less jerkface way. use carb cleaner, simple green is for your bathroom...carb cleaner evaporates really fast, you don't wanna turn your car on and still have those chemicals on it. when I did mine we ran the UIM/LIM under a hose for a few minutes just to be sure, then dried it really well before putting it back on.

ya I'll be obtaining NEW gaskets soon, from the dealer I have a part source.
