OK, I have found the emergency override / programming button for my security system, but I still can't re-program my new transmitter. I have held the button in for at least 30 seconds. I have tried with the door open, and the door closed. I don't even get the lock cycle indicating that the system is in programming mode.

Can anyone offer any other options?

Sometimes you need the ignition key on but not running the engine. I am not familiar with your system, sounds like you have a dealer installed Ford system?

I guess it is a dealer-installed system. I bought the car used and the system was already there. It is a Ford security system, though, not some other company. I have kept the ignition on, but the car was not started.

FYI for anyone else with this problem. There is a 1-800 number on the back of the security box. They are very helpful and are willing to help you.
