so i am no longer able to afford my 2003 dodge neon, so its time to sell that and get something cheaper

well first off, i am only getting this car to last me about 2 years, until i graduate college, so it needs to be able to last that long..

it is a 1997 Ford Contour GL sedan with 242K miles on it..

the contour has pretty much everything new except internals, it has a new battery, new tires, new alternator, new water pump, new radiator and hoses, used transmission with 80k miles on it, new tires, all power accessories work good, pretty much all the major components except for internals are new. all the miles are highway driven, as the owner has a job about 50 miles from here, so it was driving 100 miles per day, and thats it, they have another car for stuff around town. i know the owner, so they are good for their word.

i guess my question is, does the contour just have too many miles, or do you think it could last a few more years?

What's the price? I'd give em no more than $800.

bobby-

IF (and it's a big if!) the price is right, then sure why not- you apparently won't be keeping it very long.

know, however, that a lot has to do with how methodically the car was maintained. also, whether it is a 4 or a 6.

before you jump on this one car you are familiar with, if you have decided that contiques are in fact in your future, you ought to shop just a little to see what else might be out there in your price range. check the for sale ads on this forum....look at mystiques (generally speaking, somewhat up the marketplace in terms of standard equipment but otherwise built on the same platform). who knows, you may be able to get a little more for your money.....and maybe lower miles!

I'm not sure about that, but you can get plenty now. Millions of vehicles use the Dexron III/Mercon.

The statement above by Aliasjerk is incorrect.

Mecon V ATFluid superseded Mercon ATFluid (which was used for many years) and is the recommended fluid now.

From TSB #06-14-4, dated June 29, 2006

"ISSUE:
MERCON® Automatic Transmission Fluid is being replaced by MERCON® V as a service fluid.

ACTION:
Beginning immediately all automatic transmission / transaxle applications requiring MERCON® can now be serviced using MERCON® V or MERCON® Automatic Transmission Fluid or dual usage fluids labeled MERCON® / MERCON® V. After July 1, 2007, MERCON® Automatic Transmission Fluid will no longer be manufactured, therefore, availability of this fluid will only continue for however long it takes to deplete what remains in inventory."

You use Mercon V.

Once again, per TSB, "Beginning immediately all automatic transmission / transaxle applications requiring MERCON® can now be serviced using MERCON® V "

yeah, my bad. I misread the service announcement. I thought they were replacing the trannie fluid, and there wasnt going to be a suitable replacement for the CD4E... Sorry to cause any confusion.
