They had a cool Firefly, while we were stuck with the crappy Metro and Swift. Remember the 80s Chevy Swift with a turbo 3 cylinder? Here's the newer Canada-only Pontiac version: Suzuki 1.0L Turbo CarsHas 107ft-lbs of torque, but remember... car only wieghs about 1700-1800lbs! The vast majority of accidents occur within 20 miles of home. While the mileage is very good, they're also very uncomfortable, and the extreme small size leaves them vulnerable.
I would pick a Ford Escort for cheap, reliable, economical transportation. They have no resale, are very durable, and the 1.9 and split port 2.0 get very good mileage.
The 1985-1989 version was the Chevrolet Sprint.

I assume he will still be sharing the road with other far bigger vehicles.
What advantages would a Firefly have over a Contour/Mystique? WIth the drastic depreciation, I can't imagine the price difference would be steep.

thanks for the imput gives me lots to consider. I was thinking more of it for the economy of the car, but yeah the size might be an issue especially with her, she had a bad accident (hit by a drunk - he got off scott free too) and now is a tad nervous at times, hence why i was looking at the mazda truck.

Last I looked, the Mazda B series was in the list of the top ten deadliest vehicles (in terms of deaths per mile driven).

Yeah, not because it doesn't do well in normal crashes though. It is because that vehicle is often driven by young men. Young men are more likely to drive aggressively, drive drunk, and more likely to get into single vehicle accidents like rollovers. Vehicles that are typically driven by older men or women tend to have lower deaths per mile figures.

Who would have guessed that more accidents would happen where most people drive. I wonder if most TV is watched within 20 feet of the TV. hrmmm....
On a serious not, if the utter smallness of it all doesn't bother you, it'd probably make a fine commuter, but many of the others mentioned will too.
