Just wondering, is there a sparkplug that works better in the hotter climate (Southern Nevada) than the cooler climate. Contour was bought in the NorthEast and is now in Las Vegas. Plug and wires need to be changed. Contour tends to run a little lean. No CEL's and fuel economy is running in the 23-24 mpg range with mostly city driving and lots of AC.

I'va e always used motorcraft, but am open to ideas about a differetn brand.

97 Contour, ATX, Duratec with 218,000 miles.

How did you figure the Contour was running a little lean.

Motorcraft is good, 23-24 mpg is good for a Duratec ATX.

The combustion temps have more to do with plug heat range than ambient temps. Unless you have made huge modifications to the engine, leave the heat range alone.

I get some pinging even with Chevron 91 octane. Pinging is not as noticeable with AC off. Need AC in the desert though!

I've always used Motorcraft. Batteries are designed for warm climates, I thought that maybe some brand of spark plugs have a better repuatation for being good in the heat.

I did the UIM last September. I didn't want to do the LIM due to where I live.

Plugs have about 60K on them and need to be replaced since I have the first generation maintenance regimen.

You might need a knock sensor. Replacing it reduced pinging for me on my old Dodge Lancer. Make sure both cooling fans operate. Are you still on your original transmission with 218,000 miles?

No, the transmission went at 133K. I wasn't aware that the Contours had knock sensors.

Just to add insult to injury, a CEL came on last night with no warning. I guess off to Autozone for another reading.

Funny, the CEl went off by itself yesterday and has been off ever since. I guess it was a phantom.
