I sell on eBay sometimes. I fill out the customs forms correctly. Buyers in the UK are always so angry to have to pay customs. I got this email today:

I have received notification from the postal service that the nosepiece is at my local post office awaiting collection and payment of £18.47 ($35) Customs charge.

I am not happy to pay this in addition to the cost of the nosepiece and postage. How do you suggest we resolve this matter?

I fill out the custom form correctly because falsifying the form is a federal crime.

I'm guessing I might get a negative feedback but I'm not committing a federal crime. Why do the UK people get so upset when they have to pay customs?

Do you tell them up front that they have to pay the fees? If it is a suprise to them then I see why they would be pissed. If you tell them up front, they have no reason to piss and moan.

because they're cheap and don't like paying a lot for little things.

It's not your fault though.
They should look into stuff like that before they start purchasing things from outside the country.

That's all you have to say right there. If you get a negative feedback from someone bitter over customs fees, just post that comment.

This is their response:

I am surprised at your response. It is not in the spirit of ebay.

So here is what I wrote:

Did I fill out the custom form wrong? If so what did I do wrong?

If I did something wrong I want to know so we can resolve the issue.

sorry about the problem.

First, I'd tell him the "Spirit of Ebay" is to sell your crap! Mission accomplished!

Then, you should reiterate to him that your auction clearly said (and I assume it did), "buyer responsible for all shipping and handling fees." I would provide him a copy of the customs receipt so he knows you're not marking it up 200% and you're just charging him actual fees. That, in my mind, fulfills your obligation to him. If they can't read, then they have no business bidding!

Not your fault or problem. You can mitigate it somewhat by only using US Post as you international carrier. I won't buy anything from the USA if it shipped via UPS, FEDEX, etc... Their brokerage fees are insane.

You could be helpful and include "Brokerage, customs, duties and taxes are not include in auction close price or S&H charges", but really you're gold either way. They should [censored] to their govt., not you.

The Nosepiece is the part that holds the microscope objective lenses. A compound microscope usually has 10x eyepieces. The objective lenses that are held by the revolving nosepiece are usually 4x, 10x, 20x, 40x, 60x, 80x and 100x. That gives a magnification range of 40x to 1000x 10x4 and 10x100.
