I was just looking at some TSBs and noticed that there is a new TSB #06-14-4, dated June 29, 2006 which states that Mercon V is a suitable replacement for Mercon fluid, including in the Contour CD4E. Here is a snippet of the TSB: Quote:
ISSUE: MERCON® Automatic Transmission Fluid is being replaced by MERCON® V as a service fluid.
ACTION: Beginning immediately all automatic transmission / transaxle applications requiring MERCON® can now be serviced using MERCON® V or MERCON® Automatic Transmission Fluid or dual usage fluids labeled MERCON® / MERCON® V. After July 1, 2007, MERCON® Automatic Transmission Fluid will no longer be manufactured, therefore, availability of this fluid will only continue for however long it takes to deplete what remains in inventory.
I thought this might interest some folks here, I haven't seen this particular TSB mentioned before. Here is a copy of the TSB in PDF format: http://cerberus.cowgod.org/tsb06-14-04.pdf

We ATX guys are now officially SCREWED!!! The manual specifically states, do not use Mercon V or damage may result. I dunno how long the Mercon will last, but I'm either gonna have to stockpile some, or buy new cars...
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

So what exactly is wrong with using Dextron III/Mercon fluids? There's no shortage of that, certainly.

Nothing is "wrong" with it.
Ford finally decided that Merc V was a suitable alternative, so they are in the process of superceding the Mercon standard.
In any event, DEXRON III will still be around for awhile.
