So I was cleaning up my summer rims today, in preparation to swap out a damaged rim. I bought 2 new yokohama avs es100's to put on the fronts, and since the rears looked ok I was just going to leave them alone.

I had to put some air in the tires i'm going to reuse since they've been sitting for a while, and i noticed the stalk/shaft of the valve (the part that sticks out of the rim) has cracks in it. They don't go all the way through...and I don't know how long they've been there, but the tire holds air fine. Is there more than one layer to these things, or is that bad? Should I have them replaced??

I would get them replaced. Although there is a metal stem inside part of the stem, there isn't near the bottom, where it must be flexable. If they are cracking in one part, it won't be long before they are leaking.
