The previous owner of my car either opened the door onto a pole or another car...anyways, there is some red paint transfer on the door. It is perfectly smooth, so I don't think it's actually "in" my paint. What process would I use to try to get this off? Rubbing compound? A thinner?

It's not a big area, but would rather keep it than screw up my paint.

clay bar should do the trick. Get it from PB's, AutoZone etc.

If that does not work try a mild rubbing compound.
