So I get a leak in my front driver's side tire. It's sitting at 20psi on Monday, so I fill it up to 34psi. I notice on Wednesday, that it's back down to 20psi. I pull the wheel/tire off, and bring it into Discount tire. They labeled the tire "unrepairable," due to the fact that the nail sized hole is on the outside treads, where there are no steel belts.
So right now, I've got these awesome Dunlop Super Sport Race tires with about 7k miles on them, that probably have another good 7k miles before I'd have to replace them. That one tire is the only one that's bad. Here's the kicker, these tires are discontinued! So I called Luke @ Tirerack, and I'm waiting to hear back from him. In my voicemail, I explained my situation, and asked if he knew where I could pickup maybe 2 of these tires. Maybe one of their plants have 2 of them sitting around, needing a good home.
If not, I've got these practically brand new Bridgestone Potenza RE-070's sitting in my garage, ready to be put on. Picked them up for $100 for the set of 4. My buddy took them off of his Sti @ ~2k miles(still have the nubs!!). Just thought I'd tell you about my frustration, with having some awesome($115 a piece) tires that I can't do anything with. BTW, they're 225/45/17's, 60treadware/AA traction , so I'll most likely keep them for a spare set, or mount them to a couple of wheels I'll pickup for drag wheels.

is it on the corner of the tread and side walls? alot of places they dont do that. bu i take it to this one place he does do it and i never had a problem. with my luck it always have a nail on the corner.

Luke recommended these tires, as they were brand new to the market, and I told him about my driving style. He said these were the tires for me, and he was right! These things hook up hard, they corner fantastic, they grab hard on braking, and they do it all in the rain. But to answer your question, no, I can't see the tread coming off that fast. They came with really nice, deep grooves, and are probably at 1/2 life. I refuse to put an oddball tire on, but I hate to just throw them all out.

contourfreak22 - I've thought about finding someone who will try and patch the tire, as it's probably an inch away from the corner/sidewall. It's actually on the tread, but not within the steel belts. Discount tire said it's too much of a liability to patch it, and my buddy at Ford said the same. I'm just glad I have a backup plan with the new tires.

Dude, get one of those DIY patch kits from Autozone, etc., with the gooey string thing that you jam in with the supplied awl (giant needle). It's worth a try.

It can be patched. I work at goodyear, and I would patch it based on your description and it'll hold and be fine.

If you really can't find a place to do it, you can do what stazi said and try to plug it.

That's the plan. After I burn through these tires, I'll patch the hole in the Dunlops and put them back on.

From somebody that has patched a LOT of tires...DO NOT PATCH A SIDEWALL PUNCTURE! They aren't fixing it for liability reasons.

I had a guy come in with a sidewall puncture and he wanted a second opinion...freaking idiots!

It's not about simply selling tires, it's about the liability of that shop. If they patch it and then the patch doesn't hold in the sidewall it will blow out.

Pete, good job on READING!! I never said it was on the sidewall! It's actually ON THE TREAD!! Be it, on the treads closest to the sidewall. What I didn't know, was that the steel belts are usually from the center of the tire, to the outer most tread groove.

Here is an example from discounttire.com



My tires aren't all season's, so the tread to sidewall transition isn't so rounded. The picture above has treads continuing down into the sidewall almost, so I can see why they wouldn't repair that.
