does the 2.0 liter 1998 contour have the pats system, if it doesnt does that mean i dont need the keys w/built-in chips

No, only the V6 cars came with PATS.

You are correct...

And I have a suggestion for you while you're at the key place... have them cut you an old style Ford ignition key (the old all metal square one) so you can easily keep it in your wallet in case you lock your keys in your car.

And since you don't have PATS, you can also start the car with it...

yeah, appearntly ford felt that if your car has an I4, then nobody will even try stealing it.

Excellent idea, I had it done when I first got the car, and it has saved my a$$ multiple times.
