So over the past week I have been hearing a grinding noise that I thought was due to the wheel bearings. I had all the hubs/bearings replaced and found that the noise is still there. I was able to put it on a lift and found that while the car was on you could feel and hear a vibration and a slight grinding sound comming from where the differential is. I have a quaife diff and replaced the synchros and forks at the same time.
The sound seems to become more present when I am at a constant speed no matter what the speed, as well as when I am decelerating wether using the brakes or not. It also sounds like it is rotating and grinding against something at certain spots of it's revolution.
Is the diff bad? I did a search and couldn't find much on the quaife making these sounds.
thanks for any help/advice

.........did we set up the preloads correctly on the new diff bearings or just 'throw it in' as the masses advise?
FWIW over the past few months I've had many DIY diff's / MTX's arrive at the shop.One...had a loose crown wheel bolt that had fallen out and punched thru the trans case(new cases!),another did not have the bearings set...to the point it had NO shims in them at all and flopped around like a d**k in a bucket, that needed a new crown wheel and output shaft assy/pinion because the 'rocking' had chipped the gears....the third was just loose and noisy.....yeh....just 'drop it in'....muppets!!!! In most of these cases the diffs were sent away for check at Quaife to clean ,check and remove debris etc.Don't forget the warranty is VOID if the unit is incorrectly set up.......

I am not sure, I sent it to a transmission shop and had them do it. I will see if I can find any of the paperwork that states what all was done at the time of install

That would be the problem.

well it turns out that it wasn't the diff, the final drive or one of the gears seems to be the culprit. At least that is what is thought after driving it with the shop guy. I wish I didn't have to open it up.

The final drive is the diff.

OK, let's try this. The differential assembly on a rear wheel drive car actually includes the final drive ring and pinion as well as the differential mechanism that permits the two rear wheels to turn at differnt speeds to facilitate turning a corner. The whole thing is still called the diff.
The equillevant to that is also in a transaxle car. It is just as correct to call the final drive a diff on a front wheel drive car as it is on a rear wheel drive car.
I never remember hearing a hot rodder complaining that he blew the final drive on his dragster, but I have often heard then lament that they blew the diff, even if they blew the ring and pinion.

True, the only thing missing is the drive shaft from the "tail shaft" of the trans to the input yoke on the diff. In FWD transmissions, there is no driveshaft as the diff is packaged inside the trans with the output shaft. I hope that made sense.
