Seems this question comes up pretty frequently, so I have created this "FAQ" and added to the ****Read this before posting**** Sticky at the top of this forum.

Please feel free to add any common issues/problems and generally accepted pros/cons of Contours/Mystiques.

The following has been compiled from threads and posts on the subject.

=Common issues/problems=
- Waterpump, plastic (95-00)
- Engine wiring harness cracking/fraying (95-98)
- Dash warp on edge directly above gauages (98-98.5)
- Dash warp where dash meets windshield & around defrost vents (99-00)
- Manual transmission 3rd gear grind
- Carbon buildup in throttle body, upper & lower intake manifolds (95-00)
- Moonroof motor failure (gear)
- IMRC failure
- Oil starvation (solution: overfill oil)

=Pros=
- Great resources (CEG)
- Great handling

=Cons=
- Aftermarket is limited
- Aging platform (last production year 2000)
- Difficult platform to work on
- Most mechanic/shops dislike working/charge alot to work on the platform

=Important=
Keep in mind the age of the platform. As with any car with increasing mileage/years, you may be faced with a lot of maintenance repairs - struts, springs, bushings, alternator, wheel bearings, brakes, plugs & wires, etc. Aggressive, regular maintenance will prolong the life of the vehicle and help prevent future problems.

There are 2 different type of dash warp:

=98 (E0 only?)=
- Warp on the edge directly above guages

=99-00=
- Warp on the forward edge of the dash (nearest to the windsheild base)

I believe dash warp above the gauge cluster affects 98.5 as well since I have it in my car.

.

Besides the regular maintenance such as struts, plugs n wires, etc., the SVT has been a very reliable car

Werent the water pump problems on the 95-98 models? I have a 2000 SVT with 180,000 miles on the original water pump. I don't think it's just a coincidence that it has lasted that long.

95-some time in the 98 year had black plastic impellars. Those are the troubled ones.

The updated (mid 98-2000) white impellars have been VERY reliable.

Not exactly. I've personally helped a local CEGer change the white impellar 3 times (he got them cheap at a junkyard). Also had a couple local CEGers with white ones shatter. The white may be better, but not quite to par with the metal.

Uhm... the opposition is made of.... uhm... METAL!?!?? How COULD it be "up to par"? lol

The whites that have failed (not EVER... just within an unsuspected range of.. lets say 100,000 miles) could probably be counted on your hands and feet, VS the black ones which are currently sitting at an estimated
658,245,858,900.89 failures.

Metal ones have failed too.. They don't shatter (obviously) but failure of leakage through the shaft itself is been ABOUT as common as white impellar failure.

My stance is:
white, metal, whatever.. just anything but the original.

Those locally who switched to metal - including the guy who shattered 3 white ones - no problems in years.
