I have a fair amount of bird dropping stains on my hood. The stains look to me like cloudiness in the clear coat. Can this be repaired if the paint itself is not damaged?

If not, it's ok. The car is 8 years old so if there are some stains, it is to be expected.

Thanks for any advice.

I'm wondering the same. My car was parked out the shop for several days while awaiting a safety inspection and insurance, and some birds crapped on my trunk and I washed it like 3 days later and the stains are there and won't go away.

I've had my car on the road for a week and the damn thing is a magnet for bird crap. Must be the green.

Don't quote me on this but...i believe its because of something acidic in the bird poo. (sounds obvious right?) If I were you guys, I'd try cleaning the spots then have them gone over with a buffer. Thats your best bet. If that doesn't work, I doubt anything will.

Bird droppings are acidic are can severely and permanently damage your paint. Hence the importance of having a quality sealant on your car.

If you car has no protection, bird droppings can quickly eat through your clearcoat and into your paint resulting in a "permanent" stain.

Your best bet is to try using and polish with a proter cable or orbital to try and get it out. If you see no improvement, you can step up to a more aggressive polish. Possibly even a compound. If you have any experience, wetsanding (not recommended for those with no experience).

You may have to take it to a body shop/professional detailer and have them take a look.

If you don't have a power polisher, you could try Meguiar's ScratchX by hand. I removed a leaf imprint from my Jeep hood (the Jeep is dark blue so it was very noticeable). I've also "greatly reduced" the appearance of scratches left behind from a dog jumping up to the window of a customer's car.

Of course by machine a true polish or compound is the way to go.

If by hand, Scratch-X is probably the most user-friendly. The fact that it contains fillers certainly helps people think it's more effective than it actually is. The key to Scratch-X is repeated application and removal. Most people use it once and say it's not that good. Try it 3-5 times and the results should improve.

You will never be able to fully remove a bird dropping stain without taking off a lot of clear/paint. You are going to have to get it to a "satisfactory level" and live with it.
