When I got my state inspection today, I was told my drivers side axle needed replaceing. I have noticed small amounts of ATX fluid dripping over the past few weeks. First, what could have caused the axle to go bad? The car has about 64,000 miles on it. Second, is the ATX fluid dripping connected to it? And third, how much can I expect to pay a mechanic to replace this for me?

The axle itself would not leak. However there is a seal that it passes threw to connect to the transmission that can.

Axle can go bad, hard driving and jack-rabbit take offs will make it's toll on them (not saying you do that) an axle can run about 60 for a reman maybe alittle more. To have a shop do it add on another 75-85 depending on there hour rate. And request they change the seal which cost about 3 bucks or so. Could be looking at 140-180 depending on the shop and the hour/part markup charge.

Ok thanks. I've always treated the car nice, minus a few good starts, but I've never dropped the car in gear, or anything like that. How can you tell just by looking that an axle is bad?

i would have to say that it would be the CV joint that fails thus causing the whole axle to "fail"

other then that there could be a material failure where the axle breaks
