Ok, so back in the day it was popular to gut your main cat so I did. Now I understand what is happening to the exhaust and how that open area is bad. Now I understand that the pre-cats are the best mod and I want to do that. I have read posts about how bad the exhaust is with gutted pre-cats and a gutted main cat. Other than spending the $500 on a new main cat what other option would I have?

find one off a junk car or from someone that installed headers and got a test pipe and took the main cat off their car ....

you can by a replacment cat for much less then $500. Try looking around.

I would just use a straight pipe to completely replace the main cat, instead of just having the gutted main precat still on the car. That way you don't have all the exhaust floating around in the chamber of the main cat.

Just a cheaper route you may consider.

lets at least have some sort of cat on the car, pre cat or main cat. I want to be able to breath when i get older.

Agreed, I will put some type of high flow main cat on before I gut the Pre-cats.
