When I put the car into Drive, the tranny hits hard. Any ideas? 97 ATX GL 2.5L. Mounts look good. Rest of shifting while driving is fine.

you need to be a little more specific... Does it shift hard when you have your foot on the brake and you are puting the car into drive? Or does it shift hard between certain gears? This matters very much because they both mean completely different problems. On one hand you might have a bad mount somewhere that you missed, in which case you probably would hear a light clunking when you put it in drive... That and upon visual inspection I bet you will find little to no clearance between the trannie and subframe... On the other hand, if its shifting hard between 1st and 2nd gear, then you probably need to purchase the updated TSS, which is only like 20 or $30 and takes about 30 minutes to install.

It's when I have the brake applied and shift into drive. I have clearance between the trans housing and frame. Just replaced the trans mount and front mount few days ago. It shifted like that before and after the mount swap. It doesn't feel like the engine/trans hitting a crossmeber/frame. It feels & sounds like a hard hit inside the tranny. Once the car is in drive, no problems encountered after that while driving. Hope this helps.

I was just wondering, what if it is the force from tranny to wheel, something mechanical in that path???

Does it do the same thing when you put it into reverse, or gear 1 or Gear 2?

Mine does same, hard shifting from N to D, or from P to R or N to R... Can be this motor mounts? which ones?

When was the last time you guys changed the ATFluid? I would start there first if it has not been changed in 2 years/24k miles. Of course, the TSS could also be the reason.

The other thing is idle speed. If the idle speed is very high, it will definitely have a hard "clunk" when you shift from P to R or N to D. In my experience, if it is more than 1000 RPM when I put the tranny to R or D, there is a hard clunk when the gear engages. Check/clean/change the IAC valve. Also clean the Throttle body and MAF sensor.

Any CEL codes?

Yesterday i changed TSS and car already had same TSS ... i cleaned IAC too and hard shifting is much better now, i don't know if it's better by new TSS or a clean IAC. Before of doing this i replaced atx fluid twice(3k miles).

As you say Tony, high idle was making a lot of hard shifting, but at least in my car i guess it has something else like a bad motor mount because shifting isn't so smooth as i want

No cel codes in my case, just a leak.

I changed the fluid a couple weeks ago and TSS figuring that would solve the issue. I do not have a problem going into R from Park. I'll try the 1 & 2 within the next couple days. From what I recall the RPM's seemed normal, I'll monitor it.

Alias & Tony, THANKS for some of the suggestions, I'll try them and get some more info for you to chew on.
