I just got a '96 head off ebay with only 20K miles for $130, shipping included. I'm still shocked I got such a great deal at such a dirt cheap price. Head is in mint condition, complete with cams, timing gears, lifters and valves, which I plan to replace anyway, but its still nice to get them included.
Even better, I have a friend that has all the equipment needed for a nice port & polish job, he recently did one on his own head for a 300ZX, and it looked beautiful. He does the whole job for people for around $500, but he'll do mine dirt cheap for $80.
So an almost brand-new P&P head for $200...this made my entire year. I plan to take loads of pics throughout the whole process...i just gotta find a way to put em up here.

oh man, id imagine you would get some kick ass gains out of that head. Good luck, and get her on a dyno when you are done. I would be interested to see what someone can get out of an n/a Silvertop Zetec.

Congrats on the head! For image hosting, check out theimagehosting.com. They are free and have been very reliable. BP

Thanks, I hope to see some nice gains out of it. From experience, what do you all know about P&P DYI's? Or just P&P jobs in general? I'd like to hear anyone's experiences/recommendations. I think I also read somewhere around here some people got some kind of special coating on their heads to increase heat resistance and strength. It's also a pre-98 without VCT, so that's a plus too. The only downside is that shipping is ridiculous for something that heavy, but I guess you'll run into that anywhere.

Talk to ohsigmachi about the coatings. He is building one helluva turbo Zetec. He has pretty much everything coated in some way. Check out his cardomain site to see what I mean. As far as the DIY P&P... If the person knows what they are doing, you can get some really good gains. I'm not sure of anyone on the CEG that has a DIY P&P job on their Zetec head. You could ask around on the Focus Fanatics or Focaljet forums. You are more likely to fond more DIY stuff over there. Even though the price is steep, you could get a professional P&P jopb done by Cosworth/Focus Sport. It's a whopping $950. (Actually $1250 total, $950 for a new head with the P&P job and a $300 core.) You may be able to contact Focus Sport directly and send them your head for a reduced cost. HTH, BP

What experiences/knowledge do you guys have about DYI PnP job's? Advantages/disadvantages? I'm curious because I'd like to know my options before I go ahead and start making some irreversible modifications.

Posted by TRAVIS in the 3L forum under the sticky piston durability.
"Home ported heads never flow anywhere close from port to port and often the combination of gasses have MANY rich/lean pockets then when left in stock port."
Dont know if this helps at, just remembered reading it and thought it might

Do any of you guys know if the 2.2L head from the Mazda B-series/Ford Ranger will fit the zetec or if there are any larger heads available that are basically bolt on?
