OK, finally got around to doing this to the ol' Contour. What a massive difference it makes going from non-working IMRC to working IMRC.

Instead of replacing your IMRC, either fix it this way, or the first 8 people to send me their board with motor can have me fix it for $35 shipped back to you. I have 8 of these transistors left, so first come first serve!

Feel free to put this in the FAQ or sticky.

IMRC Fix, How-To

And for the people that might say "But I can get one of these from a junkyard for that", you're still getting the factory IMRC transistor that fails. The TIP121 has MUCH better heat tolerances.

i have a question. i have a pretty new imrc that i baught new from ford a few months ago. it works and all but i get a p1518. what causes that. i think it happened when the imrc came off the relocation bolt. so now my engien stays on and i cant seem to figure it out. do you have any idea what i can do.

when i had my stock imrc it was acting up real bad. once the car got pretty warm it wouldnt work at all. so i just moved it under the battery and never had a problem with it untill the cable ripped from battery acid getting to it.

i belive the valve cover heat realy effects the electronics in it.

Good how-to.

Thankfully my IMRC box hasn't gone yet...but it's nice to know this info/fix is available!

Thanks Chris! You are a lifesaver. I didn't want to buy a new one!

I guess radio shack only carries the TIP120 transistor. Do you think that will work, or do I need the TIP121 ?!?! If so, where can I buy a TIP121 not over the internet. I would like to have it tomorrow and I don't want to wait for shipping, etc...

Thanks again Chris! Great post.

Jeff

Don't totally understand everything your asking but did you check to see if the cable from the imrc is still hooked up? I think I had that code last time I repalced my fuel injector harness, I had to remove the imrc box. Sure enough the cable was off.

Yet one more example of why this is such a GREAT site!! I'll print this out tomorrow at work and file it with my other Contour stuff. Thanks for a great how to and the pix to make it idiot proof.

Excellent how-to! Here's a link to order the transistor but be warned there is a minimum order charge. Digi-key Also, make sure to use thermal compound (that white greasy stuff in the pic) or you could have another fried transistor in short order.

There is a thermal pad between the transistor and the housing. I chose not to put that plastic screw back on since the heat from the housing will just heat up the transistor.

I have a broken IMRC cable too, and sadly I think you have to buy a new IMRC box. At least that is what I was told.

Hi Chris
I'm going to have to open mine up, but there must be more than one version (part #)IMRC's. My DC motor's on the right side of the box.
Or could just be the Ole Forgetter.
I'm definitely going to note this TIP121 Thanks. Did you find a schematic for this or just start tracing?
I had issues with mind related to the connector attaches to the pc-board. Re-soldered and lost that intermitnent pain.
I have 98 (07/97) and recently bought a another 98 built 08/98.
Good ole running changes I guess?

TNX for sharing
Paul

Ford uses that intake controller for a lot of stuff. Even the SVT Focus has the same controller.

Just so everyone is aware, I used the TIP121 transistor. I also think the TIP120 should work, too.

I do have 8 of these transistors left, so if anyone wants one or wants me to replace their's, let me know.

Well, the markings on it say 2N6045 and 648 with an (M) on it. This means it is a 2N6045 transistor which the datasheet can be found HERE.

They look to be similar to the TIP121 as far as function. However, the (M) on the chip means it might be a Motorola and this particular rev seems to go bad with lots of heat (defective operation)

According to multiple websites, the TIP102 is a superior replacement for both the 2N6045 and TIP122 (both 100v models). The spec sheet for the TIP102 shows that its power dissipation and thermal resistance are better than the other two. Here's the page (use Search on left) that will give the spec sheets for all three:

http://www.futurlec.com/Transistors.shtml

I'm going to try to replace mine soon, and I'll probably use the TIP102.

Just food for thought.

TIP102 is TO-220AB package and TIP120/1/2 is TO-220 package. Not sure what the difference is though.

The website I posted lists all three models (Motorola manufactured) as being TO-220AB package, and not just the TIP102. Other websites also list all three as being in the same package (whether it be TO-220 or TO-220AB), as long as the manufacturer stays consistent in your search. For example, Motorola manufactured TIP102, TIP122, and 2N6045 all are TO-220AB, whereas the majority of other brands all seem to be TO-220.

So, if the stock one is a Motorola, a TIP102 that's made by Motorola should work.

EDIT: This website has a couple tables listing the differences between the TO-220 and TO-220AB.

I was told by a dealership that a code should always appear if the IMRC is malfunctioning, but mine hasn't been working for awhile and I've never had a code show up.

Apparently, though, my mechanic pulled a stored(?) code a long time ago from my car, revealing the IMRC malfunction, but a CEL never showed up before he shared that information. So either my car doesn't like to show IMRC related CELs, or other Contours share the same problem.

My IMRC has been going on and off on me but i never get a CEL. It sucks when you are ready to get on it and you hit 3800 rpm's and then nothing happens.

No. If the transistor is bad, the IMRC will function properly until the engine is warmed up. Then, the IMRC box heats up and causes the faulty transistor to stop holding a load. I imagine that the IMRC not functioning isn't enough to cause a CEL since it's not going to cause damage to the engine.
