You don't need it. Just wrenches and a hammer.

If you are replacing them, yes, you don't need the tool but if you are taking them out and then later reusing them, then a tool would help to prevent accidental tearing of the boots.

You can pick up one for about $20 at most Autoparts stores.

No. Using a tool could help cause a tear.

HAMMER

HAMMER

How will using "tie rod end removal"/ball joint separator/removal tool help cause a tear?

From Wheel Bearing removal how to in Duratec Maintenance FAQ
in reference to removing a tie rod end.

I didn't even look at the tool, most ball joint separators are just a fork.

But anyways, one more time, hammer.

Need to look. This is not a "pickle fork".

its a 10 dollar freaking tool and makes life 10X easier. I didn't tear nothing. If you jump in full bore I can see it tearing, but common sense rules.

Umm yeah I said I didn't look. Of course I've looked now... but like I said, hammer does same thing, except instead of screwing you just hit. I don't see why you would spend money on the tool or even take the time to rent it from autozone when a hammer works fine. I'm just saying a hammer and wrenches are all that is needed, but if you/anyone wants to get special tools, that's fine. Go for it.
