ok... so here we go...

1996 contour sport MTX 126000 miles

about everyother time i start my car it idles heavily and stalls... after a few trys or minutes it will start... just i have to keep attention to the rpms and apply some gas to keep them from falling too far under 1k... it seems to be worse when its really hot out

my other problem is that my car's rpms and speed dont seem to match up anymore... i could floor it and the rpms go up but the speed just seems to go up slowly... sometimes it feels like everythings right up to 3k and after that its almost like the car loses its breath... The only thing I can think of is clutch problems (EEK)...

could they be related?

the car was taken to a ford dealership to be looked at and they just hooked it up to a machine for 80 bucks... they said my catalytic converter was cloged 800 bucks please... the only problem with that is that there is no cat on the car... making them look kinda stupid but oh well...

anyone have any ideas about the car?

Clutch test:

deserted road:
accelerate easily to 15-20mph.
shift to 5th
floor the car.

Do the REVS climb while the car's speed does not?

If so, the clutch is slipping. time for a replacement.

as for the rev's I would look at the IAC as noted by Kremit.

ALSO: Autozone and other parts stores scan CEL's for free (except CA), so don't pay $80 for a "diagnostic" scan. Unless they tested Exhaust gasses, and more, it was a waste of money.

Yeah... i told them the codes because i had them read at autozone for free... i even told them not to scan it the only code that was there was a code for the cat being bad... which should always be there... ill never go back to the dealer unless its free or its a person i know that works there...
