My lighter in my 97 ford contour broke into pieces. I have searched the forums to find a how to but I have had no luck.
Please forgive me if it is already posted.

Will some-1 please give me a quick walk-through on how to remove my factory lighter. All I was able to do was pull off the plastic cover in front of it. Now I dont know what to do or remove from here. I tried to remove other plastic pieces but they feel like they are going to break.
Thanks to anyone who is will to take the time to reply.

From 1996 Ford CD Manual,

Cigar Lighter

Console Mounted
Removal and Installation
1. Note: When the battery has been disconnected or reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the powertrain control module (PCM) relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 18 km (10 miles) or more to relearn the strategy.
Disconnect battery ground cable.

2. Remove ash receptacle as outlined.

3. Remove cigar lighter knob and element.

4. Remove four screws retaining RH console side cover to console panel.

5. Disconnect wiring harness to cigar lighter knob and element.

6. Rotate the center of the cigar lighter socket counterclockwise to remove from the cigar lighter shield.

7. Remove cigar lighter shield from behind console panel. Remove inner cigar lighter socket by pushing out of console panel.

8. To install, reverse Removal procedure.

Instrument Panel Mounted
Removal and Installation

1. Open ash receptacle to full open position.

2. Remove one screw retaining cigar lighter cover.

3. Disconnect wiring harness to cigar lighter knob and element.

4. Remove cigar lighter knob and element. Turn inside of cigar lighter socket counterclockwise to remove from cigar lighter shield. Remove cigar lighter shield.

5. To install, reverse Removal procedure.

Also look at Fig 2 for console panel retaining screws.

Wow Tony, that's way more in-depth than "pull the broken part out and stick in a replacement". I probably shouldn't write technical manuals.
