is too much?

I got mixed up in the conversions and i think i might have put in too much!

put in a tad more than 5 litres.... should i be worried?

Zetec needs 4.25 litres with oil filter change. If you loosen the drain plug enough, it will drip. Use a cup or cut open an old one litre oil plastic container to estimate.

From 1996 Owners' Manual,

"2.0L engine: Carefully, pull the dipstick out again. If the oil level is below the lower notch, add engine oil as necessary. If the oil level is beyond the upper notch, engine damage and/or high oil comsumption may occur and some oil must be removed from the engine."

i wouldnt put anymore than whats required, which is 4.5 quarts

That's what I did with my Zetec. I was also running oversized filter FL-1 though, no modification needed for it. Same price, double filter - why not?

Always put 4.5 quarts of Mobil 1 in the Contour, which is convienent since my Evo take 4.5 quarts of Mobil 1 also.
