So turns out my shift linkage is a little 'loose'. (i have limited knowledge of transmission's and their workings) But how long can I allow it to stay loose. I'm sure its not smart to let it stay that way. And one more question...could I fix it myself?(with a manual and the right tools)

You may have a worn rubber bushing on the shift cable end. Check out this thread for what happened to me. You may be at the beginning stages of the same thing.
