From what I have seen it looks like a big job. What year is your car?? Depending on where you are at I have a spare rack I can sell you if you need it.

I have the same problem right now with a 98 ATX. I got a rough estimate from the dealer of over $1000, of which at least $600 is labor. It is a big job. After reading the repair manuals and doing a little search on this site you have to drop the sub frame to get at the rack. I know my son and I can do the job, it just might take us for ever. Not sure what I am doing yet.

yes you are going to have to drop the subframe and it is a lot of work but its doable. i bought a rack when i thought i was having steering problems. Turned out to be a bad lower control arm bushing. just something to check before you get into all of that

brought my car to my mechanic today. he cant seem to find any leak. the problem i am having first indicated itself by a loud and nasty whining noise in turns. anyone know the sound an old taurus's steering makes? mutiply that times 3 for what mine sounded like. i checked the fluid and it was very low. my mechanic said he could not find anything to indicate a leak and it must have happened overtime, but it happened again today after i picked it up from him, but less severely. what does this sound like? please say pump. i dont think i can afford the rack, not without some sort of loan. student with bills here

How was the lower control arm bushing related? Always looking for a simpler answer.

the bushing was wore out to the point that there was a lot of play around the bushing and when the brakes were applied it turned the steering wheel a good quarter turn very violently. Then until the brakes were released the car would go straight with the steering wheel crooked. Once the brakes were no longer applied the wheel kicked back to normal position.

it had nothing to do with leaking fluid, but it seemed like a severe problem with either the brakes or the steering and after the brakes checked out fine i was going to turn to the steering until i figured this out. Just a thought

Fill it up to max and then monitor the PS pump pulley and hoses next to it. In addition, after filling it up, "bleed" the air out.

Could it be the power steering? Check if you have enough fluid (PS reservoir near passenger side). Maybe air in PS system. Bleed by turning steering from lock to lock a few times. Then try bleed procedure again after a few hours.

my shop did find the problem when i brought it back yesterday. the rack itself is leaking from what i believe is the tie rod on the passenger side. he put it on the lift with the wheel off and showed me the steady dripw hile the car was running. he estimates the labor to be about $400 and the part is costing me about $250 from teamfordparts.

Remember, an estimate is a statement of the approximate cost & time of work to be done, not an absolute figure.
