I recently replaced the timing belt on my 98 Zetec, and now it keeps walking the belt off the end of the timing sprockets. I have searched the forums and found nothing really like this. I put a Gates kit with new belt, idlers, and tensioner on. Didn't have a problem, everything lined up great, drove it about 200 miles and it quit on me. Got it home and noticed the belt was all chewed up on the outside where it was riding off the end of the sprockets. I thought maybe the tensioner wasn't set right, or it worked loose, so i had my friend(who's a Ford mechanic and has just about every certification, award, and training class Ford gives under his belt) come help me install a new belt. Now this one is doing the same thing! Has anyone ever had defective parts come in their Gates kit? I can't figure out why the belt is moving out unless one of the pulleys is not square with the rest. This thing is eating my lunch! Why can't it be simple like a small block? Any ideas?
