If at all for some reason the timing is off after replacing the chain is there a way I can adjust it without removing the front engine cover?? I was thinking like loosening the cams enough to tip it so I can adjust the gears to position and try again. I think I was just a bit off as the car does not seem to want to start right.

If the chain is off more than I believe 1 tooth you will have interference (i.e. piston smacking a valve). But to answer your question, I don't believe you can because most likely the chain will fall off at the crank when the slack is introduced.

Thats what I was thinking to BUT if I can retain tension on the chain as I readjust the cams You think it may work?? I will see what I can do. If it is off I should be able to tell when turning the motor over right?? I would hear the valves hitting before it fires and runs If it even fires. Damage should be minimal then with just the crankinf from the starter right??

"Minimal"? I don't think so, but I thought Duratecs were non interference? Either way, if it were me, it do it by taking the cover off. That way, you are sure to do it right, instead of hoping you were right. Just my opinion.

Non-interference engines typically have belts, interference engines typically have chains.

I still don't see how you are going to keep tension and realistically move the chain on the cam gear. What if its misaligned on the crank gear? In theory, I'm sure you could do it the way you suggest, but in reality I think not.

So I really should not trust the mark on the harmonic ballancer calling out the TDC for the timing...If it was acurate I bet I could pull it off. But now I am rethinking how I want to do it.

I would look elsewhere for your problem. Chain problems on this engine are extremely rare.

Also, this is an interference engine.

It is definately the chain. I can see why the guiders were completely gone!! chain was so lose it was hitting the valve covers, oil pumo on the front of the block and front engine cover. I was able to adjust the chain no probelm by loosening the cams BUT I set the timing on the wrong stroke so it is set on exhaust strake instead of compression. I feel stupid for it and will be correcting it tommorow and let you guys knows how it went.
