Slide hammer with CV attachment is your friends. Rent it at AZ. Slide hammer and the axle puller.

Remove the axle to hub nut, unbolt the caliper to the bracket or nuckle to hub, remove the ball joint pinch bolt, pop the ball joint out using a big pry par on the LCA. I hope you have access to a compressor. You'll need an air hammer/chisel with an attachment that looks like the one in the center...

Put this on the dimple of the axle. This will vibrate the axle through the hub. Loosen the top strut nut and move the strut out of the way. Take your slide hammer w/ attach and slide it between the axle and trans. Give her a good yank and you're golden. Takes about 15 mintues if you've done it a few times.

you can use the air tools to get the axle out or you can make up an adaptor plate that bolts to the hub with the lug nuts and then mount a harmonic damper puller to the adaptor and press the axle out of the bearing

instead of the slide hammer attachment you can use a big prybar.

NEVER works for me. I always use a screwdriver and punch out the drivers side axle through the whole from removing the passenger side first.

Need to get a slide hammer w/fork like Todd has.

prybar will work but the drivers side is pretty stubborn. i just put a trans in an atx zetec mystique and it took be prying for about 2 minutes before i got the axle to pop out. never used the slide hammer axle puller thingy

i also dont remove the caliper or loosen the top strut bolt either

well, spent about 5 hours and broke two prybars trying to get my drivers side axle out last night.
even went out and bought the axle fork thing that Todd likes so much.
didnt work.
so i think i will be replacing the inner boot tonight and hope that the axle is fine.
I will have to spin it up tonight to make sure i didnt bend anything with all the prying and slide hammering.

the axle still has the slight in and out play that it is supposed to have, it just wont come out.
is there any possibility that the clip could break and fall into the tranny?

i also suppose, i could try stazis method and pull the passenger side axle too and try to punch it out, but i really dont want to do that.

blah.

Well if it broke you'd be able to at least pull the axle. I highly doubt the clip is broken. It would bend first. I've never came across one that was that difficult. Pulling the other side is easy. I'd pull it and punch it out.
