How warm was the engine when you did this? If it was warmed up, spraying it off with water probably cracked the exhaust manifold, try to track where the exhaust leak is since you claim you can see one. if its between the exhaust manifold and the cat, then you probably need a new gasket, if its coming directly from the manifold...
