Ok guys I'm trying to figure out what is going on with my car. I just started noticing a few days ago that my car seems to be slipping in gears when I step on the gas a bit.

A friend of mine says that it sounds like the clutch is going out. He noticed the same thing happening to him with his 02 Cavalier and his clutch eventually went out on him coming off of a off ramp.

As far as my car goes its a 98 CSVT with a updated MTX-75 (Torsen T2 diff, updated shift forks, Focus shift tower and a SPEC stage 1 clutch)

As for a detailed description of the problem...

Shifting into gears is no problem. I never notice any issues with 1st, 2nd, or 3rd gear. When I'm coasting in 4th or 5th gear and then start to moderately accelerate... the rpm's climb up fast and then drop down and slowly climb back up again. To me it seems as if the clutch is slipping as the car doesn't really accelerate durign this time (though it is brief).

I'm just wondering what this could be.
-Clutch?
-flywheel is glazed and causes clutch not to grab?
-Some kind of problem with the throw-out bearing?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Yup, sounds like a clutch that is glazed or going out. Can't see any way to fix it other than pull it.

How long or mileage on the spec1? Maybe it got some fluid on the disk or you just could have wore the disk out.

Well I swapped the motor and rebuilt the trans at 122k I now have 134k. I wouldn't think it would go out after that long. I burnt it a few times, but I wouldn't say anything excessive.

So Tom is the only one with an opinion? Guess it's the clutch...

So why would it have gone out so quickly?

I guess you got unlucky when you burned it a few times. Sometimes it happens. You could drive on it normally for a while and see if the glazing wears down. If it does then it could return close to its former clamping strength...assuming it is just a surface glase. If it will hold under normal acceleration then I'd keep on driving it and give it a while and see.

What you are experiencing is the classic test of clutch operation. Slipping under that kind of load (tall gear, lower speed, heavy throttle).

Your clutch is sliping. If it is from wear, defect, or foreign material on the friction faces can only be speculated until you pull it down for inspection.

So I guess the question is should I buy another clutch kit in the meantime? Also would it help to go to a stage 2 or no?
