Southeast in general, but primarily in Florida.

How much does motorcycle insurance cost? With the way gas is going, I am seriously considering getting a motorcycle, once I'm able to. Just curious.

Is my car for sale? PM me if you're in South FL.

Depends on the bike, the company, and you.

I checked when I was 17 for insurance on a ninja 500 and it was less than $700 a year. I've heard of people paying $3000 a year for big sport bikes and I've heard of under $500 a year for slow bikes.

I may be wrong, but I think you're thinking about helmet laws in florida which allow riders 21 or older to not wear a helmet if they have atleast $10k in medical insurance.

I know about the helmet thing. But I am just thinking about how much insurance would be for a 19 year old college student with NO motorcycle experience, with no bike yet.

Well since you have no experience, a small bike is your best bet anyways. Insurance (with most companies) will not be too bad.

If you're doing it just for gas, I wouldn't do it. Unless you get a crummy bike, a decent used bike will be atleast $1k, a new one will be $5k. Add in cost of gear, maintenance, and insurance (even cheap insurance) and you're not going to overcome the difference in gas costs for a while (even getting 30mpg more).

a ninja ex 250 gets 70-80mpg, expect to pay less than $700 a YEAR in insurance if it is paid for , which it should be since you can pick them up for $1500 or less in good condition. not to mention they are sweet little bikes to learn on as well as to continue to ride after you learn. might not score as many points with the ladies, but you should have a good time with the bike. i say go for it.

I was quoted less than $700 while paying on a 500 when I was 17. Maybe the quote was wrong (cuz that it's a heck of a deal), but I said, are you sure that's while I'm financing? and she said yes.

Hopefully I'll have one by the end of the year.

I hate to rain on your parade Gilroy, but man, you put your life on the line in a big way when you ride a bike down here in south Florida. Know what I mean?

I've got many years of experience in Maine and New Mexico, and I even had a bike for a year or so while I was going to school at PBCC. That was in 1982 and I was ridin' a big 750 LTD. I got rid of it because of the traffic then, now it's much worse.

I did the math on the fuel thing. I'm spending an extra $1000 a year on fuel with the price at $3 instead of $1.50. I'll spend that money on fuel in a relatively safe car to keep myself out of traction in the hospital.

Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

Yeah, with the way people drive around here...crazy.

I've seen some crazy bikers out here too. Coming home from last year's Air and Sea Show in Ft. Lauderdale, one of them zoomed right past me. All I saw was a blur of green heard an engine go by. Doing at least 150. He was way too fast for me to even guess a speed correctly. I've seen what 100 miles per hour on a road is. That was MUCH FASTER.
