I actually have non contour questions regarding suspension in general. How can you tell if the springs are shot? I know the struts are bad (been told from a shop and by the "bounce test").
Its on my fiancee's 1995 Toyota Camry. I am planning on doing the strut replacement this spring and I want to know if I can just replace the struts and not the springs or are the springs going to offset the strut replacement.
We really don't want to sink any more money than we have to into the car as we are planning on getting rid of it in another year or two. It currently has all OEM parts and has approx 110K on the clock.
Any advice?

Springs don't really go bad. The only time you would really have to worry about the integrity of the spring being compromised is if you were in a wreck. Otherwise in normal everyday use you wouldn't really have to worry about spring failure.

Thank you for responding! I didn't think replacing the springs was necessary unless you wanted to lower it. I guess the rear struts are just really shot. When we go over wavey pavement the rear bounces pretty bad like it has hydrolics! It's embarassing. For a car with just over 100K I figured they wouldnt be this bad yet. Oh well time to replace the struts.

Springs do go bad overtime.
If they don't, why do some Contours snap springs from 60-90k miles?

Because these people live in high-salt areas, be it ocean-side or salted winter roads. Ford has a recall for this issue.

Springs shouldnt break when they get old. They will sag, however.

Again that is why I said under normal conditions. I have never had any issue with any of my cars with springs.

Along with this thread, everytime I hit a bump it sounds like something is hitting inside the wheel wells. Loud thumps. It drives me crazy. I had the struts replaced under warranty around 73k... almost at 100k now. Not sure if the struts are already bad.
Any suggestions?

Springs can sag over time. Note the low-ass posture of some older Crown Vics. The spring rate will not change, however.
If your springs are not broken, they are probably fine for now. Since you are trying to save money, just do the struts, but inspect the springs for damage as long as you have them off the car.
Function before fashion.
