Hi all, long time looker, first time poster!
Some of my 96 Contour O2 sensor wiring is melted. How can I remove the sensor from the circuit so that the Electronic Control Unit doesn't see it? If I pull F13 fuse doesn't that just take the o2 sensor heater out of the circuit?
I ask this because ford dealer said this was why my car is running so bad. Before this it was the catalytic converter, which I replaced for no reason, same problem.
When I removed O2 sensor in front of cat it was black in color not sandy brown.

Nope, you cannot remove the O2 sensor. It must be there as the PCM is a closed loop system.

Why did they tell you the rear sensor is a problem?

Why not just get a soldering iron and some heat shrink tubing and fix the melted wires?

Altough I am not suggesting this, what others have done to address P0420 codes, is to build a MIL eliminator for the post-cat sensor. The cost of said elimiator is only a few bucks.

Black Carbon on the sensor is not uncommon and not necessarly a problem.

About 2 feet. It got too close to the cat!
I removed melted wirring and installed new tonight. It Still runs real rich. Anybody know what voltage range the brain box should see coming from a good O2 sensor?
