it was a Production car in 1997 but officialy only 8 where ever made of which only one of those "officialy" made it for use on the road (tho unofficialy there are 2 Road going cars) the rest where used for Racing

the Road Cars used a twin Turbo V8

that should be a Huge enough Hint to find something out

now by your deffinition - I think your hint is a bit misleading - the "production" cars didnt use a twin turbo V8


they used the reg I4 - the Elise GT1 is a converted Esprit GT1 to make it up to new regs.

My Dad worked for Lotus Race team in 1997 and did all the Chassis work on the Elise GT1 which used a lenghtened Elise Chassis to accomadate the Esprit V8 which they Couldn't use due to Homoligation reasons they had to Fit a Chevvy Short block V8 N/A

i've got a Few pics on this puter of them being Built aswell as a whole Folder of others taken at the Various Circuits

the I4 your Refering to is the Rover K-series engine fitted to standard Elise Road cars of which there are thousands and the Lotus Excige which is a hard top elise
