Before you flame me, I am at work and have a deal BUT need to do it fast and dont have the time to read up on it. I have a chance to buy a great running 3.0 for $125 out of a 98b Taurus and need to know if I can swap that in directly as is and run it on the Contour's computer until I get a chip programed OR do I need the Taurus computer for that?? Quick response would be great and appreciated since I have limited time before I have to tell him wether or not I want it. Thank you guys.

Tony

IMO, save your money for an 01+ 3.0L.

Perfect cadidate for a "cheap" "old-school" hybrid buildup. Sub $1000 buildup, but you will still need an LSD & have possible oiling issues with the lack of proper draining in the stock 2.5L heads.

Then NO, it won't work ... the FEAD is completely different and will not fit.

I've wondered about the gains from simply getting a block like that and sticking it under my stock 2.5L heads, with basic I/H/E work. Sort of the bare minimum effort package, mainly to avoid having to fool with changing up the fuel system (I've got a '97).

Well, the 1998 block will only work after a certain date since "early" 1998 blocks don't have the revised mounting points for the MTX-75. However, if it is and you are comfortable living with a possible oiling issue in certain situations (hard right hand turns), it's definitely a cheap way to more power IF you do all the work yourself. It would require all new gaskets (timing cover, valve cover, heads, etc.) and new head studs. Everything else comes from the 2.5L donor. If the 2.5L is low mileage, you could retain the timing wear components (timing chains & guides). Not doing ANYTHING other than tuning (no head work, etc.), I would guess 180-185fwhp. I wouldn't bother doing this on a non-SVT because the gains would be less and not worth the effort in my eyes.

Like someone else mentioned already ... an 01+ Escape block is your only bet and even it requires modifications to work ... there is no such thing as an untouched "drop in" for these cars. They all require some modifications/parts swapping to get them to work ... perhaps reading the FAQ's would help
