The best oil.....well alot of people use Mobil 1. I use quakerstate oil. As long as you change the oil and keep up with the maintenance you should be fine.

I'm pretty sure that's a completely different engine. Mazda had a 2.5L they used in the 626 - it's probably that.

Wow, very interesting! My mistake: Edmunds didn't have any pictures

I'm surprised that Mazda took an engine from their corporate partner instead of using the one they had already.

So, when are you going to do a 3.0L swap on the minivan?

Well, ASSuming that the heads are the same, then yes. The odds of being at high revs and high gees are almost zero in the MPV, but there's no harm in 6 qts or a little more - again, assuming it really is exactly identical, which is probably is.

I am a former 2000 Mazda MPV owner. It is the Duratec engine. If you look at the plug wires, they are Ford. It even comes with a FL820S oil filter.

Some of the electronics are Mazda, but the block, heads and intake are Ford.

The US built Duratec engines were used because of some exchange rate issues that made this attractive. I suspect there was some excess capacity on the 2.5L engine line as the Contour and Mystique were not the radical sales success' that Ford had hoped for.

Later years, 2001 or 2002, I don't recall right now, they went to the 3L Duratec.

You might try mpvclub.org (or is it mpvclub.com) they have a pretty good owners forum over there.

You can also use one or both exhaust manifolds for extra breathing. Exhaust will have to be modified.

As I remeber it, Ford pretty much crammed the Duratec down the throat of Mazda due to the excess capacity you mention. Mazda wasn't all that happy about it and the magazines pretty much panned the vehicle as the 2.5 did not have the torque to push the heavier MPV around.
