Stick it in your butt and rotate.

Although not a true apples to apples comparison I bored out my WRC block .020 over, however it is capable of being bored .040 over. I think .30 is the Max for a stock Zetec, but most replacement pistons either come in a .007 (simply a re-hone, not a true "bore") or .020 over.

How much extra power would something like that give you?

When I had my Zetec rebuilt about 5 months back they bored .30 over and said that was the most they could do. Honestly I noticed a pretty big increase in power, but the reason it was rebuilt was the spark plug burnt a hole in the number 2 piston. Still can't figure out how all that happened! But back on point I think that had there been good compression (ie. no hole in the piston) then the power increase wouldn't have been that noticeable.

Stock bore = 3.339in
stroke - 3.465 in

displacement = (3.14/4)*(3.339*3.339*3.465*4) = 121.3in cubed

with a .030in bore

displacement = (3.14/4)*(3.369*3.369*3.465*4) = 123.5in cubed

Wow a whole 2.2 cubic inches or 0.036 liter

For the miniscule displacement increase I wouldn't do it if you planning on running FI on it later. .020in max on a stock block if you're going to force fead later on.

Typically on a V8, it will increase torque due to the bigger displacement and slightly higher compression. On this little engine, I can see compression increasing a little, but not enough to make enough power to tell a difference.

So if I were looking to increase power through a tear down and rebuild what would you recomend?

Rehone but not over bore?

For increased compression would it be better to simply shave the head?

Do you guys think that most of the power to be gained in our cars is in head and not in the block? (oversized valves with exhaust and intake porting) Cam gears and timing changes?

From what I understand our stock crank is a good piece and does not need to be replaced until someone is going for big power and does not intend for it to be a daily driver.

yes

It would be easier, but I prefer using After market pistons, because then its reversable

Yep(outside of FI that is) working the head over will always complement any kind of forced induction (turbo, S/C, or nitrous) you choose to do later. There is a lot of power to be had in the block internals also, but its rediculously expensive (sighs as he reads his credit card bill) and its really just weight reduction and lowering of the coefficient of friction.

You got it.
