Luke-

Looking for some 224/45/17 tires to mount on my 99 SVT Contour.

I think I have it down to three choices:

AVON M550 (W rated)
Kumho Ecsta ASX (W rated)
Yokohama AVID H4S (H rated)

I am coming from BFG KDWS 16".
I am willing to give up some handling.
I want the ride to get a lot quieter.
Approx the same ride quality or a tad softer.
More snow traction would be nice.
I don't need better than an H speed rating the way I drive.

How would you compare these three? I have the read the customer reviews on your website.

Thanks
Brian

Not sure how often Luke signs on. I'd personally give him a call. Cool guy to talk to, and will definitely recommend the right tire for your needs.

If you've read the reviews how much more do you want? I doubt he has driven cars with these tires on them.

If I just go by customer reviews, these 3 tires rate so closely in scores that the differences are statistically insignificant.

Yet something tells me that if I drive, say, a Avon M550 and a Yoko AVID H4S back to back, they will be DISCERNIBLY different.
There isn't any track testing done by TireRack where all 3 were pitted against each other.

Finally, I posted vs. PM'ing, because I found little commentary on these website in regards to the Avon tire. Since Avon seems to be a newer "darling" of TireRack track tests (they seem to win or almost win every test TireRack runs), I thought it'd be nice for everyone to gain knowledge from Luke on how it compares to some of the older brands out there.

I can call him if he doesn't respond in a few days... got a busy few days ahead of me...

FWIW, I called Luke on Tuesday to ask about replacing the 2 year old/50k mile Yokohama AVID H4S's on my car; after a brief discussion of alternatives I will be going back with the same tire. Several people here have them and a search should turn up my original thread about them in January of 2004.

I'm not familiar with the other tires you listed but will say that I wanted a quiter ride than the OE KDW, longer life than the Ecsta 712's I had previously, and generally wanted a more compliant, daily-driver-friendly tire than either of those two.

I'd definitely like to hear feedback on the Avon though.

I just checked tire weights because of the other thread about inertia that is going on.
Per TireRack:

Kumho weighs 23 lbs
Yoko 25 lbs
Avon 27 lbs

What a wide difference! I think based on price and their nice light weight I'll go with the Kumhos.
