That changed part way through the 98 model run. Most likely your 98.5 will need two programmed keys to add a third one.

My 99 Se required 2. For some reason the key was only good for about 3-4 months then I had to reprogram it each time.

If it were mine, I'd go get a couple of conventional keys cut, then just mount the good PATS key inside the steering wheel shroud so to can trigger the PATS system.
You'd have the same security level as most other Fords of the same age and, besides, who the hell would want to steal a Contour?
